where to get a decent music conv

hi i was just wondering if anyone knows the name of a decent music converter.
 basicly i use media monkey to put my music onto my ipod.
what i would like to do is, as my music is all different quality bit rates, id like to just make them all the same.
 the reason i want to do this is ive got about 40 hiphop albums and they take up about 12gb on my computer and thats a lot off memory gor my old machine.
 and also i can only put about 12 albums on my ipod as its only 2gb. or is there another way i can compress my music so
(1) it takes up less room on my computer
(2) i can get more music on my ipod
(3) I CAN CHANGE IT BACK TO DECENT SOUND QUALITY WHEN I FINALLY GET A NEW DVD/CD WRITER as mines done in.
and just to round off im not to bothered about loseing to much sound quaility as it only for the ipod and hopefully can change it to something decent when i copy to cd.
