One Laptop Per Child: give 1, get 1
The One Laptop Per Child concept made the headlines last year with a prototype machine and a mission to provide cheap laptop computers to the two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education.
For many countries struggling to find resources to devote to education - sometimes less than $20 a year per child - these laptops represent a means to provide learning, self-expression and exploration to children.
The "XO Laptops" as they are known are already in use in several countries and with mass market production due to start this October, many more children should soon benefit.
To promote the scheme further, starting 12 November, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 programme for a brief window of time. For $399, customers will be given the opportunity to purchase two of the XO laptops - one that will be sent to a child in a developing nation, and one to be sent to the child of the person donating.

The latest version of the XO laptop is a durable, ultra-low-cost machine with a built in wireless router so that children in the most remote regions of the globe can be connected both to one another and to the Internet. It features a 7.5 inch, 1200 x 900 pixel, TFT screen and self-refreshing display with higher resolution (200 DPI) than 95 percent of the laptops on the market today.
However, the key advantage of the XO is its power consumption which is less than one tenth of what a standard laptop consumes. This means it can be recharged by human power via a crank - critical for the half-billion children who have no access to electricity.
