CoD:4 was pretty amazing, I wouldn't describe it as "Best Game Ever" but it was an exceptional FPS in an age where it's hard to prod your head about the mass of other FPS' out there.

To echo what Quantum has said,I would think that every era will briing along a new superb game that we will all give thumbs up. All is changed from one good game per year to one every other month due to the fantastic advances of graphics and quality of PCs.

Any Unreal Tournament game. So far, in the series for a fanboy like me.. There hasn't been any let downs only sick and twisted improvements. With the graphics improving every step of the way, and the game modes being harvested in masses, there is nothing wrong with any UT. If we're speaking all consoles then... Here's my list.
PC: UT Series
PS2: Hitman Series
PS3: UT3
Xbox: Halo
360: COD4
SNES: Super Mario Brothers
Game Boy: Pokemon (Gotta Catch'em All :D )
There is probably a lot more.. I just can't think... Being 3:12AM, posting this stuff.

1. zelda(n64)
2. runescape(pc)
3. sims
I haven't really tried any new games but I am always taking suggestions. ;D
