I was recently on a first date and I'm having a hard time understanding how successful it was. We talked a lot, laughed, but in the end she just said "let's text" and left. How do I know if it makes sense to ask her out for a second date or if it was a polite refusal?

Sometimes people are just polite, but if there were jokes, laughter and an interesting conversation, then there is a chance for continuation. Try to write, offer something specific - if she is interested, she will agree.

The first date is always a bit nerve-wracking, and it is not always clear whether it is worth waiting for a continuation. One of the signs of a successful date is interest in communication. If the conversation was lively, and the person does not disappear after the meeting, this is a good sign. Sometimes it is worth taking the initiative and suggesting a second meeting, especially if there is mutual sympathy. It is also important to consider the context - were there hints of further communication, light touches or discussion of joint plans. Some people are more cautious and do not rush to decide on a second date. You can learn more about this here https://www.nu-date.com/sex-on-second-date-insights.html , where different signals after the first meeting are analyzed. The main thing is not to rush, but also not to delay showing interest.
