Title: GPU
Post by: TheNightWatchman on February 02, 2007, 10:42:42 pm
Ok since a few members on here seem to know a hell of a lot more about GPUs than anyone I know I'd thought I'd ask, what would be the best graphics card for me to buy? I'm looking to spend no more than $200 AUS which is about $150 USD or £80. From what I can see that's in Australia I'd be looking at getting either a 6600 GT, 7300GT or a 7600GS (note that I don't know a lot about any other GPU brands other than NVIDIA... of which my knowledge is limited anyway) whichever is better.

Also if anyone knows how to get a better deal from someone, info would be appreciated.

Note that I don't play many games so I don't really care how the latest game would run on the graphics card... but I do video editing so I need something with a bit of guts (but not looking for anything too fantastic yet).

Also if someone could look at this?

I'm thinking a 7900GTX at that price with a bit over a day to go... there must be a catch (other than it's not new)?
Sold for a reasonable price.

My knowledge is also limited to Nvidia cards.

First of all, are you looking for an AGP or PCI Express card? Despite the fact that PCI Express is newer, more often than not the AGP equivalents are more expensive.

(all mentions of dollars are in USD:)

I just recently got a 7600GT (AGP) which is about the best you can get for AGP from Nvidia. I can say that it's a wonderful card to say the least (and for the price, I paid $180). If you want a PCI Express 7600GT, you can pick one up for about $130.

For you I recommend the 7600GS with 512MB ram. The 7600GT only has 256MB. There are a few versions of the GS with 512MB ram Since you do a lot of video editing and no gaming, more memory is more crucial to you. Check www.newegg.com they seem to have the best prices.

You can also try www.tigerdirect.com or www.outpost.com

I would not trust ebay for something like this.

Firstly I was just looking around eBay to see what kind of prices they had.

I am looking for a PCI-E card which makes things easier I expect.

Hmm just a quick look at pricyspy Australia tells me I can get from a shop in this state a GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCI Express for $163.20 AUD or a GeForce 7600GS 512MB PCI Express for $156.90 AUD.

This is from this website.

In a closer look it has the 512mb 7600GS at that price only having 128 bit DDR2, and another having 256 bit DDR3 for twice the price, so is the cheaper one worth it?

Considering you have now got it down to 2 cards there isn't really a choice go for the one with the 256 bit memory path its more important being able to access the memory in time rather than having lots of it you cant access when you need it.

I Seriously doubt any of the video editing apps you have will require 512MB of ram. I have never come across any and I use some high end kit.

? I haven't got it down to 2 cards I was just looking at ones suggested that's all. And the 256bit memory sounds good yes, but at twice the price of the other one, it's out of my price range.
