Title: A quad PC to it's full potential
Post by: Synbios on June 24, 2007, 04:16:16 am
Just a few months ago I put together a new computer with a QX6700 core 2 extreme (quad) and 4 gigs of ram. I haven't really seen the advantage of all this though.

I'm running 64bit vista and it's always using all 4 gigs. I have no 64bit programs, and most programs don't use all the cores. Does anyone have any 64bit programs or games? Or any programs that are multithreaded and can use multiple cores?

I know everything will eventually be 64bit, but at this point it's a total waste.

o.k, I hate to disappoint you but there is only one thing at the moment where 64 bits is awesome:

Scientific Applications

I could real off a whole load of programs while if you've played around with on previous computers you'll notice a huge increase in performance on 64-bit multi-core CPUs, not least of which is the new Mathematica 6. However, almost nothing else is compiled for 64-bit because the performance advantage is negligible when the hardware emulates 32-bit so well.

Though I do have to say, I notice a slight speed improvement especially when multi-tasking in XP x64 vs. XP Pro, but that's not really comparable because XP x64 is really just Windows 2003.

i just got this computer in time for the sumemr so i haven't had a chance to try scientific applications yet. Once I get back to my university in the fall, I'll start running Maple, Mathematica, MATLAB, etc.

I bet they're going to run amazing and hopefully I can get more work done with less stress and in less time.

Don't know about the 64Bits but the extra cores are great in MainConcept Mpeg Encoder

Here's an interesting article on how games are going to suffer under a 32 bit OS with messy memory management Microsoft has employed: http://anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3034

panorama factory looks really cool. I'm going to try it out later today.
