Title: So how are you p2p'ing?
Post by: chip! on June 14, 2006, 02:01:13 pm
What networks and clients are you using for what types of files, etc?

I use mostly Bit Torrent and once in a while LimeWire..

Well I live in a house with 5 other people, we have an 8 meg line (with a 1/2 a meg upload), we are upgrading to 16 meg soon. However if we are all run P2P programs at once it would be the death of our Internet connection for anyone who wanted to use it to browse the web or play MMORPGs. So we have a server in the front room which has both Azureus and eMule Plus on it all the time, which we can either go downstairs and access or use the network and access their web interfaces.

We have found with careful monitoring of how many connections these programs can open we don't have a problem with Internet slow downs.

J/k.......Bittorrent,Newsgoups,Limewire

lol, funny thing is some people still use Kazaa :-\

for mp3's, either Limewire or Ares because some songs (normally popular) are corrupted on Limewire.
for everything else its either bittorent (via, utorrent) or Newsgropus. i found out my ISP has a pretty good newsserver, but it only has 3 day rentention. its good for getting new stuff and seeding on bittorent though.

For me its wide open:

Frostwire, for software and PC apps..

WinMx, for mp3's.

And torrent's vary upon connection\latency\ping times and popular files.

Today I upgraded to the latest version Frostwire (4.10.9) and updated the host file for WinMX. All is just dandy and I'm looking to incorporate another torrent client.

Quantum,

I also live in a house with roomates, only 3 of use right now (more to come) and we all use torrents.  One of the guys insists on keeping a high upload and I can't play any fps games because of the constant lag and spiking pings.  I spent a week or so learning and trying different things to improve the connection status and this is what I found:

QoS (Quality of Service) tab in my router settings solves all my lag problems!

I have a linksys wrt54g wireless router.  I upgraded the firmware to dd-wrt (an open source firmware with many features including QoS).  Under this QoS tab, there is a setting to manually set a max cap for upload and download.  I set these to 85% of my true connection speed - this supposedly keeps your ping low even when you max your connection but I do more than just this.  There is a services priority category where you can set proirities for different protocols.  I set my chat and games programs like aim, http, ventrilo, half-life to the premium setting and p2p services like emule and bittorrent to the bulk setting.  After doing this, when I go to open up a new webpage and the connection is maxed out, that http service gets priority and I don't have to wait for any lag and the webpage opens up right away!  Lastly, I don't tell my router unsavy roomates about this but I set the mac address to my computer to recieve priority over their computers.  Low and behold all these settings give me ultra low pings for everything even when my roomate is uploading on unlimited!  My computer doesn't show any form of lag whatsoever when my connection is maxed out.  Having no lag satisfies me and being able to upload at unlimited satisfies my roomate.  A win win situation.  I think all routers should have this setting.

Hope this helps anybody who has to deal with sharing a connection like I do. 8)

P.S. You can still kill the router's speed if you let your P2P programs open up too many connections - as Quantum stated (the router can only handle so many).  Keep that in mind.

For bittorrent, I use µTorrent.

For P2P(only single mp3's), I use KCEasy(Connects to Ares, Gnutella, & OpenFT).

My setup:

- BitChe with uTorrent 1.6 for movies and big files. (and the weekly Nip/Tuck episode :))

- Limewire PRO 4.12.6 for all the popular music singles

- Shareaza 2.2.1.0 with Gnutella1/2 and eDonkey enabled for rare small files, mostly trance/techno mp3's

I really don't like Shareaza that much and I realize it hasn't been updated in a year, I used to use eDonkey 2000 Pro instead.  Since eDonkey has been discontinued, I don't know how else to get on the Overnet/eDonkey network where all my favorite rare files are. I guess eMule is an option. I tried eMule, eMule Plus, and eMule Xtreme, but they all seem just as bad as Shareaza.

Does anyone else have an alternative to get super-rare files?

I d/l music and have been using bearshare for it the past few months. No problems there only not a ton of options for my trance style music...

Have d/l many other programs from download.com (which is where I found this by the way), only to find that I am so unskilled at the computer, I cannot connect to anything. Even messing with my firewalls and other port junk. Which I truly no nothing about. lol

I find myself to be pretty sufficient in other things on the computer. I guess just not when it comes to this. So searching for a better way to find music, I came across this type of d/l. So far I have been able to connect and d/l a few things. But from the looks of it, it's full blown albums and such. Huge files.

Still learning though.  :)

I used to use Frostwire for mp3's and Astalavista for apps and movies, Asta got shut down but re opened as http://astatalk.com/board/, (http://astatalk.com/board/,) they're good for movies and Apps but most are Rapidshair so unless you pay are very slow. I now use Utorrent now and think it's brilliant.
