LCD = Lower Quality Picture
Plasma = Slightly Smaller Life Span

Both of them = Lower Quality Picture than a big ass CRT if you don't have an HD source for your T.Vs, Sky HD or something you download (HD sources are about 1GB - 1.5 GB for 45 min T.V episode).

They're getting cheaper and cheaper, but unless your willing to pay another subscription to Sky or you have a 360 or PS3, the whole thing is pointless. I'm waiting for Laser T.Vs to come out or LED backlit LCDs, get a high quality one of those when there's actual HD TV.

General Discussion / Re: Firefox 2 Beta 2

I updated to 2.0.0.5 and seems a lil choppy. Anyone else having problems? If so please chime in.

2.0.0.5 is fine for me, but things like this do happen to people, I guess you could try a clean install, or report your bugs to bugzilla. Anyway, Firefox 3 isn't long away now, I think beta 1 should start real soon.

Here's an interesting article on how games are going to suffer under a 32 bit OS with messy memory management Microsoft has employed: http://anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3034

P2P - Filesharing / Re: New uses of P2P technology
« on: July 08, 2007, 08:32:29 am »
P2P isn't very good for scientific applications, often the amount of data sent and received in cluster like applications, where using multiple CPUs across multiple computers, is very very small, otherwise it wouldn't be very good for that kind of application.

P2P is simply ideal for sending large amounts of data across networks when demand high and supply bandwidth is low. I also find it somewhat useful for sending huge amounts of data across LANs, it seems to be a more reliable system than something like Windows network transfer (300GBs+).

A little of a worrying (well maybe not) update when it comes to AMD:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7890

Barcelona is only going to come out at a maximum of 2 GHz, this said I've heard that they've struggled with getting Barcelona at higher speeds because of issues to do with it needing to be in a server environment, apparently the Desktop CPUs aren't suffering the same issue. Also there's a huge market for lower power x86/64 CPUs that run at a completetive speed, so this might be a good move by AMD anyway.

That's my take on it, but no way to know until we see things come out and how they do, don't bother reading the comments on the article, they are all very fanboyish.

o.k, I hate to disappoint you but there is only one thing at the moment where 64 bits is awesome:

Scientific Applications

I could real off a whole load of programs while if you've played around with on previous computers you'll notice a huge increase in performance on 64-bit multi-core CPUs, not least of which is the new Mathematica 6. However, almost nothing else is compiled for 64-bit because the performance advantage is negligible when the hardware emulates 32-bit so well.

Though I do have to say, I notice a slight speed improvement especially when multi-tasking in XP x64 vs. XP Pro, but that's not really comparable because XP x64 is really just Windows 2003.

Haha, cool, probably just about the point where I'm tipping over to Intel as well. But yeah, for that price range, there's not a massive difference between Intel or AMD, no matter what the fanboys tell you.

With a bit of luck though you should have a good upgrade path this Christmas when their Agena CPUs come out (new architecture).
actually..for that kind of money I couldn't get intel based CPU with the similar specs for my PC here in Indonesia. :)

Btw, will this new Agena use the same AM2 socket or it will use a brand new one?
maybe you can help a bit with some info links? thanks before Quantum :)

There will be a new socket called AM2+, you will be able to use either that one or the AM2 one, but there will be minor power performance benefits if you use AM2+.

You will need a BIOS update though. AMD are saying it will perform 25 - 55% better than Intels current lot, clock for clock. But we'll have to wait and see really. Barcelona is the name of the server architecture, Agena is the name of the Desktop architecture. I get most my news from here: http://anandtech.com

Here's a couple of random articles on the state of AMD:

http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2986
http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2939

Recent benchmarks of the latest architecture have been a little worrying, but they were in a pretty bad set-up (hardware provided by a partner and not actually AMD and massive BIOS issues).

General Discussion / Re: Has Vista been cracked?

Who cares its just XP with a Flashy style and Stacks of DRM & Forced Driver signing

Everyone should boycott Vista

I was using Vista back in its Beta and RC days and there are quite a few features I like about it. DirectX10 will eventually force me to go there, because I love my games...

Bugs & Feature Requests / Re: Thanks For Bit Che!

Users can add their own torrent sites.

We tend to be a bit conservative when adding sites, only really search them if they actually provide results that other sites don't, at the moment there are 18 public sites to search and 31 private sites you can enter login details for to search.

There's quite a few cool new features coming out in Bit Che build 60, which should extend the amount Bit Che searches from the already existing sites, however its been delayed for some time because of Chip being busy with real life stuff.

Glad you like it  :)

I've heard some very good stuff about the series and i've seen a random episode. I'll start the whole season eventually.

How many seasons are there? just one?

Yeah, 1 season, 23 episodes.

It has a confirmed 2nd series with 24 episodes, with a spin off series Heroes: Origins, which will have 6 episodes, each introducing a new character, 1 of which they'll permanently include in the main series at some point.

i've only watched part of one episode. is the series that good? it seemed a little silly, but i guess my friend said that it gets better after a few episodes?

Firstly, you need to watch it in order, it's pretty much pointless otherwise. It's very plot centric, it's like reading a book or a comic, picking an episode at random would be like picking up a book, reading 1 chapter at random and judging it from that.

I highly suggest you catch the first 2 episodes, the first episode is a little introductory, but you'll likely have a good feel for the series and if you like it or not by the end of the 2nd episode.

But in my opinion, it's one of the best T.V series I've ever watched, certainly better than anything I've ever watched by the end of series 1.

iGoogle doesn't bother me too much. I've been using Google Personal for a bit, iGoogle seems a little snappier and I like the themes that they have (well there was 1 I liked so I was happy).
