Last year's Halo: Reach might have been the swan song for original franchise creator Bungie, but the famous first-person shooter series has plenty of life left in it.

At their E3 2011 press conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft pulled the wraps off two new Halo endeavors. A short teaser trailer marked the debut of Halo 4. Featuring the return of series staple Master Chief, the new game is due out in holiday 2012:

Computers - Technology / Distant Control
« on: June 05, 2011, 03:48:14 am »
A friend of mine has Verizon as their ISP, not to long ago there was a situation with Windows Live E-mail and the server settings. Now I can setup POP3, IMAP, SMTP (others) and assign proper ports. Now as a tutorial for my friend a Verizon rep. asked to install a program in which the Verizon rep. gained control of the PC (Dell_Vista_8GB RAM_500GB_HDD) using the cursor and navigated WLM to correctly setup her account. Now with the phone on speaker we communicated to each other as the VR explained to us what he was doing and why.

Now my curiosity is what was that program she downloaded from Verizon and how simple is it to use.

Offbeat Relish / Man-Size Meteor From Comet Lights Up Georgia Sky
« on: June 03, 2011, 04:58:00 pm »
By Mike Wall , SPACE.com Senior Writer Space.com | SPACE.com – Thu, Jun 2, 2011

A brilliant meteor blazed through the sky above Georgia recently, and two NASA fireball-monitoring cameras caught the dramatic display on video.

The meteor was caused by a human-size chunk of an unknown comet. It was the brightest meteor yet recorded by NASA's fireball-observing network — based at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. — in its nearly three years of operation, officials said.

The 6-foot-wide (1.8-meter) space rock barrelled into Earth's atmosphere at 10:47 p.m. EDT on May 20 (0247 GMT on May 21), about 66 miles (106 kilometers) above the city of Macon, Ga.

At the video link, look at the bottom of the screen as the meteor comes into view.

P2P - Filesharing / US goes on offense against digital piracy
« on: May 28, 2011, 01:41:15 am »
By Rich Gardella and Jamie Forzato, NBC News

The U.S. government is cracking down on Internet piracy. This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced it had seized the domain names of five websites that it says were being used to sell counterfeit goods and illegally distribute copyrighted media content.

Amid growing calls for more government regulation of the Internet, the United States is conducting what it calls "a sustained law enforcement initiative aimed at counterfeiting and piracy" – an effort that already has resulted in arrests and the seizure of 125 websites.

Ask anybody who uses a computer if they've ever downloaded or streamed media content for free on the Internet, and the answer most likely will be yes. The U.S. government and the American media industry say as much as a quarter of this kind of media traffic violates U.S. copyright law, and both are getting serious in their attempts to turn off the spigot.

But detractors of the crackdown say that the government shouldn’t side with industry and attempt to restrict what flows across the Internet.

Computers - Technology / SSD's and HDD's
« on: May 26, 2011, 10:34:24 pm »
Solid State Drives (SSDs) have a great potential to speed up your system, and they're becoming mainstream with prices dropping and the technology maturing. SSDs are faster, have no moving parts, use less power, are quieter, less succeptible to physical shock, with lower access time and latency than traditional mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs).

However, SSDs use memory chips to store data, which makes them quite different than traditional mechanical drives and most current OSes are still not tuned by default to use this type of storage media to its full potential. It may take a bit of knowledge and tinkering to setup and tune the SSDs and squeeze that last bit of potential and improve their reliability.

The foregoing article aims at some general principles in improving the speed and reliability of Solid State Drives, discussing some  tweaking recommendations. Even though most tweaks are illustrated under Windows 7/Vista, the general ideas can be applied to any OS. In a couple of words, the main idea behind SSD tweaking for performance revolves around partition alignment, enabling TRIM, reducing unnecessary writes (very fast drives with somewhat limited write cycles), and freeing up space where possible. Note that newer generation, and more expensive SSDs have improved write endurance.

Windows 7 is better at recognizing and working with Solid State Drives (SSD) than previous versions of Windows. It has the ability to detect SSDs and set the disk defragmentation service to manual, even use the TRIM command on some drives. Even with these basic optimization steps, there is always some room for improvement, as outlined below.

Offbeat Relish / Iceland’s Volcano
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:14:35 am »
The eruption of the Grímsvötn volcano in Iceland is the country's most powerful in decades.

NASA, with its Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Terra satellites, has brilliantly captured the havoc inducing volcano from space. The images are of the volcanic ash, which has made its way from Iceland to England and across Europe. This is of course not the first time NASA's satellites have captured natural disasters from space. Here are a look at a few photos of the volcano.

Computers - Technology / Time-saving keyboard shortcuts
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:57:31 am »
Originated by Jared Spurbeck.

Pointing and clicking with a mouse is easy, but computer pros take the fast lane: Keyboard shortcuts. Below will be links for anyone interested in learning some keyboard shortcuts. Also a few that can be used while logged into your Facebook account.

Facebook shortcuts,

Facebook has a whole ton of keyboard shortcuts. If you're using Google Chrome, you can press Alt+1 for your news feed, Alt+2 for your profile page, Alt+3 for your friend requests, Alt+4 to see all your messages and Alt+5 to read your notifications. Alt+? does a search, and Alt+M lets you write a new message.

If you're using Firefox, try Shift+Alt, then the number. Internet Explorer users will need to hit Enter after each shortcut, while Mac users will need to hold down Control+Option instead of Alt. (Mac users of Firefox need to press Fn+Control.)

General Discussion / Sony PlayStation Network
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:41:20 pm »
TOKYO (AP)

Sony began restoring its PlayStation Network service in the United States and Europe on Sunday after shutting down the service almost a month ago due to a massive security breach affecting over 100 million online accounts.

Sony also began a phased restoration of its Qriocity movie and music services which share the PlayStation Network's server, said Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka. Limited services will also resume in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Middle East, and Sony said it will start restoring the service for users in Asia soon. It aims to fully restore the PlayStation Network by the end of May.

Sony's PlayStation network is a system that links gamers worldwide in live play. Sony shut it down on April 20 after discovering a hacker attack.

Sony said personal data, including credit card numbers, may have been stolen. But the company said Sunday it had not received any reports of the stolen information being used illegally.

Kazuho Hirai, chief of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation video game unit, said in a statement that the company has beefed up security measures to protect customers' personal data.

While the partial service allows users to enjoy video games and online chat, Sony said consumers still cannot buy video games or other content by using credit cards.

"While we understand the importance of getting our services back online, we did not rush to do so at the expense of extensively and aggressively testing our enhanced security measures," Hirai said.

Among the 100 million user accounts, Sony said about 92 million can access the limited PlayStation network service.

The network serves both the PlayStation video game machines and Sony's Qriocity movie and music services. It is a system that also allows users to upgrade and download games and other content.

Sony spokesman Fukuoka declined to give details on the company's probe into the hacker attack.

Offbeat Relish / Ice Cream Flavorology
« on: May 10, 2011, 02:51:46 am »
It's called "flavorology," an attempt to link personality types to ice cream flavors. Think astrology--but instead of the alignment of the stars in the heavens, it's all about the alignment of scoops of ice cream in a cone.

Icecream.com assembled a list of eight popular flavors of ice cream and then correlated each to personality characteristics, including a romantic compatibility forecast.

Now as I live in the Northeastern U.S. and approaching our summertime I'll be the first to tell you that I indulge on icecream. Out of the list on the link provided below I favour chocolate chip as first and strawberry as second. All in all I like neopolitan flavour.
