Xbox-Modding Judge Berates Prosecution, Puts Trial on Hold
December 1, 2010

LOS ANGELES — Opening statements in the first-of-its kind Xbox 360 criminal hacking trial were delayed here Wednesday after a federal judge unleashed a 30-minute tirade at prosecutors in open court, saying he had “serious concerns about the government’s case.”

“I really don’t understand what we’re doing here,” U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez roared from the bench.

Gutierrez slammed the prosecution over everything from alleged unlawful behavior by government witnesses, to proposed jury instructions harmful to the defense. When the verbal assault finally subsided, federal prosecutors asked for a recess to determine whether they would offer the defendant a deal, dismiss or move forward with the case that was slated to become the first jury trial of its type. A jury was seated Tuesday.

P2P - Filesharing / $1.5 million fine!
« on: November 05, 2010, 12:51:06 am »
What's the value of a song?

Jammie Thomas-Rasset has spent the last few years in court debating that question. The Minnesota mother of four is being penalized for illegally downloading and sharing 24 songs on the peer-to-peer file-sharing network Kazaa in 2006. The jury in her third trial has just ruled that Thomas-Rasset should pay Capitol Records $1.5 million, CNET reports, which breaks down to $62,500 per song. It's a heavy penalty considering the 24 tunes would only cost approximately $24 on iTunes, which was Thomas-Rasset' argument, too.

Browsers / Firefox's add-on Firesheep.

Appalling Danger If You Use Public Wifi

The next time you fire up your laptop or iPad in a coffee shop, beware. Someone may be watching you--more closely than you ever imagined. A Firefox add-on called Firesheep, just released a few days ago, allows anyone to see exactly what you're seeing on your computer--and even get full access to your Facebook, Amazon or Google account. It's high-tech hijacking.

Reports are that both Macs and PCs are vulnerable to the software that allows anyone to view and click on the screens of anyone else sharing the same network in a public place. Bottom line: If you use your laptop in Starbucks, you will automatically grant full access to anyone else in the place to everything you're doing.

"Not only can they see what you're doing, but if, for instance, you're on Facebook, they can literally click on your name and enter your Facebook account or Amazon account or Google account," says WTOP Tech Guy Gregg Stebben, "and in a sense, become you and begin to do things in your name." He adds, "I'm very leery (of public WiFi) and really we all should be."

Call it the male-female orgasm gap, and women are being shortchanged.

...85 percent of men said their latest sexual partner reached orgasm, only 64 percent of women said that actually happened.

General Discussion / U.S.A. Collegiate Football
« on: October 02, 2010, 02:11:19 am »
I am a die hard fan of football at the college level, Ohio State (my alumni) may go undefeated this year and win the championship in Glensdale Arizona, but I would like to read comments otherwise stating the difference. Anyhoo I'm not sure this warrants a poll but I'll begin one anyways.

Now if anyone feels their university (conference) has been left out chime in post haste!

P2P - Filesharing / Ruling on Internet `neutrality'.
« on: April 06, 2010, 11:31:46 am »
By JOELLE TESSLER, WASHINGTON (AP)

A federal court threw the future of Internet regulations into doubt Tuesday with a far-reaching decision that went against the Federal Communications Commission and could even hamper the government's plans to expand broadband access in the United States.
