P2P - Filesharing / RIAA labels sue Usenet.com
« on: October 20, 2007, 07:15:17 am »
By Egan Orion

THE BIG MUSIC companies have sued Usenet.com for copyright infringement, report Torrent Freak and Billboard.

The lawsuit was filed late Friday in New York federal District Court and lists fourteen RIAA member companies as plaintiffs. It alleges that Usenet sells access to content that infringes copyrights, including unauthorized music files, and that it "touts its service as a haven for those seeking pirated content."

Computers - Technology / HP new gaming system.
« on: October 11, 2007, 07:22:57 pm »
I seen the commercial on the 'Cartoon Network' (hehe) and the PC drew my interest. Now alike Alienware or Dells' XPS gaming systems, HP stepped it up a notch and came out with a gaming system called "Blackbird 002".

Now I took the time to navigate thru their website featuring 'Backbird' and the PC in question has it's pros and cons. I for won will give it a 4 outta 5 stars. Since it's new to the market price (USD) is way to high and some of us in here can buy and assemble our own PC to equalate this HP. So I'll put in the link, take a gander and give the forum your feedback

Computers - Technology / Connection Speeds
« on: September 10, 2007, 08:08:03 pm »
I remember starting a topic about broadband connection speeds back when DietK was around, so I am starting a  topic here also.

With BitChe like DietK most of us agree these programs (created by the ever ubiquitous chip) wouldn't be so popular if 88.99% of internet users were using...gulp - dial-up! So a lot of us have gone to DSL, Cable and Fiber (FiOS) and without these broadband connections, files larger than life would be unattainable.

Now this thread isn't solely about computers but there is a connection between your personal PC and the way you personally connect to the internet and I would like to know what our members and guest have when it comes to their ISP and package plans.

You can post your ISP, speeds, rates and results here.

Now there are a few test sites here within the continental US and east across the Atlantic so I'll put in links to the most common.

testmy.net download----> http://www.testmy.net/speedtest/d_load.php

testmy.net ----> upload http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/u_load.php

For those in upstate New York, Ohio, Penn., Ontario----> http://speedtest.cogeco.net/

For those in major US cities----> http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

And for those across the globe----> http://www.speedtest.net/

General Discussion / Microsoft takes on the free world
« on: May 30, 2007, 02:11:37 pm »
By Roger Parloff, Fortune senior editor

Microsoft claims that free software like Linux, which runs a big chunk of corporate America, violates 235 of its patents. It wants royalties from distributors and users. Users like you, maybe. Fortune's Roger Parloff reports.

(Fortune Magazine) -- Free software is great, and corporate America loves it. It's often high-quality stuff that can be downloaded free off the Internet and then copied at will. It's versatile - it can be customized to perform almost any large-scale computing task - and it's blessedly crash-resistant.

A broad community of developers, from individuals to large companies like IBM, is constantly working to improve it and introduce new features. No wonder the business world has embraced it so enthusiastically: More than half the companies in the Fortune 500 are thought to be using the free operating system Linux in their data centers.

When it comes to software patents, "The free world says that software is the embodiment of knowledge about technology, which needs to be free in the same way that mathematics is free, everybody is allowed to know as much of it as he\she wants, regardless of whether he\she can pay for it and everybody can contribute and everybody can share."

In the meantime, with Microsoft seemingly barred from striking pacts with distributors, only one avenue appears open to it: paying more friendly visits to its Fortune 500 customers, seeking direct licenses.

If push comes to shove, would Microsoft sue its customers for royalties, the way the record industry has?

"That's not a bridge we've crossed," says CEO Ballmer, "and not a bridge I want to cross today on the phone with you."

Teen From 'Microchip Family' Killed in Crash

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Oct. 1) - A teen engineering prodigy who gained national attention in 2002 when he and his family received identification chip implants on live television was killed in a motorcycle accident, authorities said.

Derek Jacobs, 18, lost control of his motorcycle early Saturday and crashed into a guardrail and a pole, the Palm Beach County sheriff's office said. He was wearing a helmet.

"It was just a crazy accident of a bump or something, and he was catapulted," said his mother, Leslie Jacobs. "He had, of course, potential, because he was brilliant, and he was just a wonderful son. He wanted to make a difference in the world."

Derek was set to get his engineering degree this year after only two years at Florida International University. He wanted to be a neurosurgeon, his mother said.

At age 12, Derek became certified by Microsoft as a systems engineer. He was qualified to run corporate computer networks.

Two years later, he and his family had identity chips implanted on live television. They were the first family to get VeriChip IDs, made by Applied Digital Solutions.

Derek pushed his parents to look into the chips as a way to help store medical information for his father, who suffered a host of health problems, including cancer.
