I recently bought a high end pc, 6600 quadcore, 2 gig DDR3 mem and Geforce 8800 GTX Ultra, bit I kept my mem that low because XP can't handle more, unless I get xp 64 bits which has the same problems vista 64 bit recently has (drivers, drivers, application problems and... drivers).
So I stick to xp until Vista is a little older and more adult.

Reasons to get Vista: 64 bits, so alot more memory build in possibility, DirectX 10 (nice to see that little more FX) and Basicly because eventually it will run games faster as promised (in a year or so that is)

Reasons not to get it: still is in a baby state, haven't learn how to walk yet and well drivers and software support isn't that great yet, but will be eventually, just like with xp when it first came out.

So if you really want to use your 4 gig mem and really want to run directx 10... get vista (maybe in duel boot so you can run old games and software on xp still), if not, just wait a little like I do  ;D

XP x64 has much better performance than Vista x64. I've been using XP x64 for over 2 years now and its gone from hardly supported at all by many drivers to being a perfectly fine OS to use. It's also the best OS in terms of real time performance, it allows the faster 64 bit applications to run without the huge overhead of Vista.

That said, in the long run, Vista x64 is probably worth getting for such a high end machine. Because most people will probably end up on Vista at some point, now more applications are being written for it.

Never really tried XP 64 bits as it isn't or maybe wasn't supported in my own language, so never had the oppurtunity to really test it, my father tried it tho, but that was quite some time ago when nothing really worked in it yet, might have to test it out some day, or wait till Vista 64 bits works fine

I'm running Vista 64 bit and it gets better as time goes on. It was just like when windows 2000 Pro and windows XP came out. I got win 2k within the first month of it's release and it seemed like a disaster, I kept wanting to go back to windows 98 SE. Eventually, time caught up and it was my favorite windows OS to this date.

On my current system I have the idiotic and nagging UAC turned off, firewalls and windows defender turned off, sidebar and many many other Vista features turned off. I'm also running the windows classic theme. The performance is pretty good now :)

If I shut everything off then what's the point? Right now you can barely notice a difference between my computer and XP. Well, it's so I can have DirectX10, and to have the latest OS for future compatibility. Plus the new icons and a couple other subtle details are nice additions.

I would say Yes, Vista is better than XP. But, it requires a lot of tweaking and turning off crap. I have 4 GB of ram and somehow Vista still manages to use all of it. You need a high end system to use this.

I can't believe how badly Microsoft screwed up UAC. I installed ubuntu on my laptop because it delivers the same kind of easy experience of XP without quite the same resource requirement and came across their similar security system and was surprised at how amazingly well it just blended in to the OS without getting in my way ever 5 minutes.

Vista has a lot of bugs, not least to say to do wit stupid memory management, e.g virtual memory usage of a game is increased by the size of the memory of your graphics card pointlessly.I was looking when building a new computer of switching over to Vista SP1, but unless DirectX 10 suddenly makes a big leap in looks and performance, I think I might end up going with XP SP3 until either Vista SP2 or Windows 7.

I was running windows 2003 server instead of XP for a while. Maybe you might want to check out Server 2007 or whatever the vista server counterpart is. Even if you don't use the server components, the OSes are stripped down and have better performance.

I love my XP and have heard bad things about Vista. What stinks is that I'm trying to buy a new laptop from dell and I have to pay more to have XP? Well that just stinks!

;D That doesnt sound right. Have you tried e-bay or Amazon? They are pushing Vista from all corners now but I still like XP. You could always get a laptop with a decent mobo in it and have it updated with recent cpu plus more ram.

Can't you just load it up yourself.

We ran Vista here, but find it doesn't always meld with other programs. It does have some great advantages, but what the use of something if it doesn't work with all the rest of your system.  Stick with XP here now.

I think like anything new, leave it a couple of years till they iron out the problems, then get it.

Like Windows Live Messenger.. new version is terrible, freezes, terrible.. the older 8.1 is so much more reliable.

I thought about ebay and amazon but the pc I have now I got through Dell and everytime I have a problem, they are right there with support. Of course I paid extra to have the support but my computer is covered until the year 2011. What I was afraid of was if I bought it anywhere else but Dell, I would have to take it somewhere whenever anything happened with it. I'm so spoiled with my 'free' customer support! =) Do things from ebay and such come with those warranties and such coverage?

I'm running a dual boot system XP pro 64bit and Vista ultimate 64bit both are very fast. I have an AMD 6400 dual core and 8 gigs of ram. I do find myself on Vista most of the time. Mainly because Vista is my default system.  ;D

Just installed Visa 32 bit  home premium over winxp and believe me me ,after you have gone through all the updates and changes you will be well used as to how Vista works.
We were all reluctant to change from win98 to winxp but found xp to be excellent in the long run. Vista is going along the same route and it will be the way to go. Graphics are excellent, and as time goes on we will all get the hang of it. Vista 64 is a bit of an overkill for the average home pc user. But! everyone has a choice, Unless you are into massive gaming or video  8gb  ram is not needed. 2-4gb is more than enough. Most of the higher bench marks  on Futuremark come from 2x1 GB ram

I've all two on the same pc. Vista is very nice, but normally I use XP, becouse it's a friendly operatve system. Iìve to say that Vista is a little faster than XP, but it's not enough tested.

ciao ;)

Its starting to get up to performance levels with xp. I had HD partitioned to both xp and vista but now sticking with vista. Its getting better day by day.Like everything else we move on. XP will always be one of the good ones if you just need basics,(Dont no whether SP3 will keep it going)  but anyone that plays games will be pressured into upgrading into vista because game manufacturers are pumping out material that will only play on vista platform. Money.lol.
cheers

well this is a question that still has mixed reactions to it

But we should not forget that XP had similar reactions in the beginning with lots of criticism until SP2 was out which improved XP a lot.

Time will tell about Vista too.
