New motherboard
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:01:47 am »
;D  With my small win on the Lotto I decided to try another project. Although with the prices it will take a week or two.
Hope I got lucky on a brand new boxed DX58SO motherboard. Just paid £147.00 for this item.Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz S1366 (Nehalem) 8MB L3 Cache 4.8GT/sec Retail Box. This on E-Bay tonight. Prices seem to be around £244.00 from other retailers.
A new CPU for socket 1366 will be next in line, plus new memory. Will sift through during next few days to get a good price. Seems like a reasonable way to go.
cheers

Pricey stuff, I can't comment on the general quality of the X58 boards, but there's so few of them and they're so expensive it won't be hard to find comprehensive reviews.

I'm looking at building a computer at the moment, but for a much small price range I can buy an AMD Quad core and chances are I can stable overclock it to 4.5 GHz+. But good luck  :D

Tks Quantum, Yes there are many reviews out there, all positive. Its a big step for me to get away from socket 775 which has been my favorite.
Just got 6MB 1600MHz  3x2MB memory cards for £89.00 with heat covers for this board.  The CPU i7 extreme may have to wait for a week, but have you any thoughts on a graphics card (or perhaps 2 for SLI). This may be my last build for some time. Appreciate your thoughts.
And NO I am not changing to AMD. ;D

 ;D Yes perhaps ATI.
been scrounging around for a good graphics card. One that seems to give me most pleasure is the ATI 4870. Even the 512 MB with DDR 5 at less than £100 would be way better than I have at present. The 1GB even better. Got a little market for some of my other home built PC`s so this will greatly offset costs. The CPU will be the biggest cash flow for now. Come on folks, give me some suggestions.?

The 4890 just came out, I've seen them from about £190 - £210. The performance per pound is supposed to be pretty awesome.

Anyway, here are some numbers in terms of performance:

;D  Working my way to a final product.
So far I have the following.
Intel extreme DX58SO motherboard.
3x2GB OCZ high performance triple channel memory DDR3  OCZ3X1600L V6GK with heat shield,for i7 /CPU/mobo
4870 intel graphics card 512MB
i7 nehalem 920 1366 2.66MHz CPU.

Next on list will be 750w Toughpower PSU (using one on this PC).
PC Case.
Hard drive, probably 500GB. Its strange that the 10,000rpm disks never took off. Too expensive.
Mostly SATA connections.

Last ,but not least. Hope the better half doesnt find out >:D
cheers

You mean AMD/ATI graphics card, not Intel  :P

Have fun with it ^_^

 ;D good on you Quantum.
Finally put this rig together. Added Cooler Master silent 700w PSU with big fan. All the cords come seperate and you just plug in directly to PSU box what you need.ie HD,Fans, Disk drives etc. Running cool at 32deg. But had a scare when CPU core temps at 80deg. This was due to one of the legs on the heat sink having splayed out during installation, causing the heatsink and CPU not tight together. Got that sorted and the rig is fast at stock. Just finished auto tuning the graphics card and now working on a reasonable OC on CPU etc. Very pleased so far. Will add as I go along. Extremely quiet .

;D This rig is out of sight. Totally awesome. 2.66GZs stock. Slight OC TO 3.61GZs on stocki heatsink/cooler. Been doing some benchmarks on Everest 5.1 and usually top marks over i7965 extreme. At this OC temp still at 50deg but I think will wait fror better after market heatsink/cooler.

It`s lots of fun Quantum. It will go to 3.8GHz or better but probably with water cooling. Mobo stays around 39deg and CPU varies from 40-55 depending on OC.

good monitor program from Intel for voltage etc

;D Ordered new Scythe Mugen-2 CPU heatsink cooler today. Not bad for £28 +vat and good cooling qualities.http://tech-reviews.co.uk/reviews/scythe-mugen-2-cooler/  I realize that I have to remove Mobo to put backing plate on, but its getting easier.lol. I am not quite sure yet if the single ATI 4870 graphics is as good as the 2x8800gt cards in SLI, but will do a swap over after I get new heatsink.

Would sure like to hear from other members who are upgrading, no matter how small or large. We can all learn from each other without being too technical.
cheers

;D Got the new CPU heatsink cooler today, really big.lol. Need a new full tower case. Probably Coolermaster 1000 or Cosmos S. But pension day is just around the corner.
Did run present rig up to 3.93GHz for short period and great results on Everest benchmarks. The CPU does all the work for you, I have extra fans in this older case and highest temp during test was 66 deg. The cut off is 100 deg. Anyone got any ideas on PC cases??
cheers

Accidently run up a bit on stock cooler. CPU   CPU Clock   Motherboard CPU   CPU Clock   Motherboard   Chipset   Memory   CL-RCD-RP-RAS   Read Speed

Core i7 920   3933 MHz   Intel Smackover DX58SO   X58   Triple DDR3-1433   7-7-7-16 CR1   18681 MB/s which is 4,000MB better than other posts

;D Since we dont have many PC posts on components. I thought I would add another update to this thread. Rather than go for one of those monster full tower cases I have found a very spacious easy to use case. a mid tower, Coolermaster haf 922, many nice features, including a cut out on the mobo tray behind the processor to give room for changing back plates on heatsinks. Will have fun playing with with fan layouts.
http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cases/867-coolermaster-haf-922-case There are many reviews on this case and are positive. Its also much cheaper than big brother haf 932 and I can pick one up from £80-100 locally.
Have a look at link and let me know.tks
