wireless routers and broadband
« on: July 09, 2006, 08:03:03 am »
Just a general question to all of you.
Yes I can connect to my broadband by ethernet cable when the rest of the family are out. Speeds and downloads are great.
When family returns I connect back up to the wireless router to keep everyone online. How much does a router slow your system down if any? Is there really a big difference between the older 54mb router and say the 104-8mb. Im sure there are even better routers out there for a price.
It doesnt seem to affect me much,but just wanted your thoughts
cheers

theres not really a difference yet, most laptops with built in wireless cards and even those with a USB wifi adaptor, only support 54mbps. unless you get 55MB broadband you should be ok

But why do I have the choice of 54mbs and 104mbs. Is the latter faster or just a marketing ploy??
cheers

With a wireless router you will always lose latency\ip packets and your connection vs. wired will make a difference.

the latter is faster if your wireless equipment supports it. however 54mbps is the standard at the moment and nearly all products with built in wi-fi support only that

Thanks folks.
Just one more small item which may be of use to someone. I noticed over the past two weeks that my router Netgear 54mbs was going crazy, lights flashig as they do when someone in the family is using their pc. This was even when all the secondry pcs were shut down. The  main family pc was running much slower. I immediately thought that some of our new neighbours had tapped into my system.
Called NTL who advised that this would not slow pc down, and to rerun the Network cdr (not uninstalling) and refresh the original settings. Worked great and now back to normal.
Now if I could only find a suitable cdr to refresh Billy!
cheers  ::)
