I thought you were aweing at the 15Mbps, yeah TheHalf definitely made some calculation errors.

He said "15000 Mbps  ::: 1831.05 MB/sec" which I think he meant he has 15000Kbps or 15Mbps, which would be about 1.8 MB/sec.

What's the average connection in England, and what do you have?

Average connection in the U.K at the moment seems to be 8/0.5, which I'm on at the moment, last year I was on 16/1 though. You can get up to 24 or 25 I believe though.

I can't really say what an average is here, but I have 5/.5 at my apartment in Worcester when I'm at school. My parents have 8/.768 with 16/2 speedboost (runs at faster for first 100 megabytes) so I use that when I'm back home.

The most residential right now is about 30/20 but that's only with fibre. Pretty soon there will be much more fibre deployment and with DOCSIS 3.0 coming out, I suspect the averages should be going up quite a bit.

It's just understanding kB - kb and recognizing the upper\lower case b and in some instances where the b is always lower case the upper and lower case k...Kb\KB. Anyhoo there's a simple conversion calculator you can use to identify what you may be getting for what your paying for:

The left side is right, 15M is 15 million, but the right side is wrong. I'm not sure what you're using for your calculation but it's probably something simple that you're missing.

Oh your right Quantum...those miniscule typos that I am so infamous for: that should be 15'000'000 = 1831.05kBs or 1.83 MB/sec, my bad.

The left side is right, 15M is 15 million, but the right side is wrong. I'm not sure what you're using for your calculation but it's probably something simple that you're missing.

I'm currently with Virginmedia ( ex NTL ) in the UK and have a 20Mb/768Kb cable connection ( the sooner they dig up all this useless copper the better ).
Download speeds as most will know vary greatly. At the moment I'm being traffic shaped due to my high usage ( a practice that Virgin sneaked in without too much af a public fanfare ) and find my speed suffers a lot.


But I have hit near my theoretical max when downloading from newsgroups. I can often get speeds between 1500 and 1800 kB/s.

I think what the original poster was interested in was what kind of speeds are people downloading with a bit torrent client. That's always hard to say because I can only download as fast as the data is pushed to me. I rarely hit above 900kB/s with a torrent client.

I regularly hit 1.1MB/s on torrents on a connection whose DSL speeds are reporting at about 11 | 1

I don't know to tell all of that speed stuff but I can say 2 days in and WOW! Why have I wasted my time with  things such as limewire, bearshare, etc..

1 byte is 8 bits are correct. kilobit megabits and up to 1000 bits are elements of the transformation, the bytes into kilobytes and megabytes is an element of the transition, however, since 1024, in megabytes, you simply can not say that there are 8 megabits. Technology to stay away if you want to do a little.
