What we need to know about Windows 7 Release Candidate.
Posted by Ed Bott @ 9:09 pm @ the ZDNet website.

Microsoft has finished its work on the Windows 7 Release Candidate and has announced a distribution schedule. For those who are thinking of evaluating this release, I’ve put together this FAQ. If you have any additional questions, ask them in the Talkback section; I’ll update this post as needed.

1: Windows 3.1
2: Windows 95
3: Windows 98
4: Windows 2000
5: Windows XP
6: Windows Vista
7: Windows 7

I found this article which apparently gives the one and only reason why its going to be 6.1 instead of 7.0:  an attempt at increased application compatibility.

http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/10/14/why-7.aspx

And here's how the Windows releases are counted and numbered:

1. Windows 1.0
2. Windows 2.0
3: Windows 3.0
3.1: Windows 3.1
4: Windows 95
4.0.1998: Windows 98
4.10.2222: Windows 98 SE
4.90.3000: Windows ME
5: Windows 2000
5.1: Windows XP
6: Windows Vista
6.1: Windows 7

so, they did the same version numbering thing with 98 - 2000 - XP...

FTA:

"Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and then we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release we didn't' want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility."

"We learned a lot about using 5.1 for XP and how that helped developers with version checking for API compatibility.  We also had the lesson reinforced when we applied the version number in the Windows Vista code as Windows 6.0-- that changing basic version numbers can cause application compatibility issues. So we decided to ship the Windows 7 code as Windows 6.1"

http://www.blogsdna.com/3083/how-to-upgrade-windows-7-beta-build-7000-to-windows-7-rc-build-7100.htm

How to Upgrade Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 to Windows 7 RC Build 7100

1. Download Windows 7 RC build 7100 (if you downloaded Leaked Windows 7 RC which is not in the form of ISO then Skip to Step Number 3)

Filename: 7100.0.090421-1700_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRC1CULFRER_EN_DVD.iso  (32bit)

2. If you have downloaded Windows 7 RC in the form of ISO DVD then Burn ISO on dvd and copy all files & folder to your Hard Disk Drive. You may use ISO file mounting tool to extract files.

3. Now Access Source directory within Widows 7 Copied files & folder.

4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.

5. Replace miniclient value from 7100 to any lower build for e.g 7100 to 7000

6. Now Save the file cversion.ini

7. Run installer.

The above steps will be required for an RC to RTM upgrade installation.    ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Notice they compare 7 x64, Vista x64 and XP x64. The thing here is that XP x64 is based off Windows Server 2003 and has a different performance portfolio to the original XP.

Has any one installed Win7 and if so how did you go about installing? ie: separate partition or upgrade 'cause what I'd like to do since I have 4 separate HDD's is dedicate one solely for installing Win7. Any replies will be very helpful.

Hey... I've done it a few times now..

The first time, I choose to install it to a separate partition.. and thus dual boot Vista & Windows 7...  this was painless and required nothing other than already having the D:\ partition setup. The clean install setup took about 35 minutes and I had no problems.

The 2nd time, I choose to "upgrade" that Win 7 installation using my post above that changes the "cversion.ini" so that the installer will upgrade the "Beta" to the "RC"...  this also was painless, aside from having to make that minor file change... but the upgrade took a little over an hour.  If I would do it again, I would skip the upgrade and just format my D:\ and start fresh.  I have not tried to "upgrade" a Windows Vista partition to straight Win 7..    while this WILL be possible with the RTM of Win 7,  I dont know off hand if it can be done with the RC. I am guessing that it can with a simple modification of the "cversion.ini" to include a minor= build of 6000  (Vista).

But keep in mind that the RC will expire sometime next year, so I would advise you to first install it as a dual-boot machine, in case you want to fall back to Vista.. (or i guess WinXP)..

Any other specific questions.. I'd be happy to answer.. :)

thanks!

for those of you who are interested.. the first Windows 7 RTM Candidate has been released:

Windows 7 RTM Candidate build 7260 x86 (by WZT)
http://www.gosugoon.com/data/7260.0.x86fre.090612-2110.client_en-us.ultimate_loader_7201x86-gosugoon.iso.torrent

This is one of the last builds before it is finalized and sent off to the computer manufactures and DVD/CD presses. There might be one or 2 more "builds", but at this point, Windows 7 is feature complete, entirely stable, and rocking awesome!

According to many sources, the actual Windows 7 RTM will be released June 19th, 2009. However, the main advantage of using one of the last RTM Canidates is that your FREE beta license keys WILL work.. so you can keep using the product for free until it expires... March 2010.   If you wait to install the RTM, then you will have to use a new license key..  etc.
