Distant Control
« on: June 05, 2011, 03:48:14 am »
A friend of mine has Verizon as their ISP, not to long ago there was a situation with Windows Live E-mail and the server settings. Now I can setup POP3, IMAP, SMTP (others) and assign proper ports. Now as a tutorial for my friend a Verizon rep. asked to install a program in which the Verizon rep. gained control of the PC (Dell_Vista_8GB RAM_500GB_HDD) using the cursor and navigated WLM to correctly setup her account. Now with the phone on speaker we communicated to each other as the VR explained to us what he was doing and why.

Now my curiosity is what was that program she downloaded from Verizon and how simple is it to use.

There are a lot of options to remotely control computers. I know a few off the top of my head:
Use RealVNC or TightVNC.
Use Windows/MSN Messenger and use a remote desktop assist
Use Windows Remote Desktop Connection

Yep.  we used to use RealVNC/TightVNC because you can create a standalone program.exe. Pretty nifty.

The other option is using something like LogMeIn  (I love that and use it all the time). They make a few different products but all related to Remote Desktop Access.

Thanks,

I have some familiarity with RDC, but what ports are associated and how to navigate thru both Firewall software and or a router firewall.

I just forward port 3389 and the default remote desktop connection within windows works great. If you are trying to help somebody with a problem, using the remote desktop assist from within MSN messenger is definitely the way to go, though it does use the same port 3389 and requires that it be forwarded.

Can you ping port 3389 within CMD with all safety firewalls disabled?

By far the simplest option.
