GeForce 8800GTX Performance
« on: November 03, 2006, 12:17:24 am »
One mean looking card:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4812

"Half Life 2: Lost Coast loves the GeForce 8800GTX. Here the GeForce 8800GTX is able to show significant performance gains over AMD’s ATI Radeon X1950 XTX—approximately 92%.

Quake 4 shows similar gains as Half Life 2: Lost Coast  too, an approximate 92% improvement."
Daniel: "This tastes like chicken."
Carter: "So what's wrong with it?"
Daniel: "It's macaroni and cheese."

I'm lacking a lot of money right now, but I am hoping to put a computer together some time next year. So I plan to get something like a 8900GTX GDDR4 Over clocked beast  ;)

Nvidia comes out with new cards every six months. I would expect the "8900" series to come out 6 months later. They always start out with a x800 series that only begins to show power and then it's trumped by a x900 with faster clock speeds, more memory, etc.

Have you seen the leaked specs for the ATI R600 chip? Looks pretty damn good, can't wait to hear how it benchmarks against the 8800, should get back in to the two companies competing on performance and price again  ;D

Well I read the first few posts and it appeared to be nVidia fanboys saying how great this new nVidia card is...

I'm not saying it's an awesome card, but who are they to say it'll blow the R600 away when no independent benchmarks for the R600 have come out?

...hmmm, I don't really trust that site. It contradicts a lot of the sites I read and trust which have compared the 8800GTX to a pair of ATI 1950XTXs in CrossFire and in some cases takes some really odd settings to benchmark against.

Depends what game you're playing. Sometimes faster CPUs don't help at all, some times they do. A lot of games have crappy CPUs in mind when they build the games, so it's the GPU that is the bottleneck.  If you've got something equivelent to an AMD 3800+ X2 or above, I wouldn't worry too much for a good 6+ months.

What is the difference between running 2x 6800GS GLH  factory ovetclocked cards 512 mb SLI (bridged)  for one 8800GTX which costs 4 times as much. The Mobo can take it, the performance is more than adequate for most games. Is this a designer thing? I can still over clock my cards to more rhan compete with this.
